Chief of War, the highly anticipated Apple TV+ series created by and starring Jason Momoa, is set to premiere globally on August 1, 2025. This bold and emotional project tells the story of Hawaii’s unification from an indigenous perspective — a deeply personal vision for Jason and his collaborators.
🌺 A Story Rooted in Heritage
Co-created with Thomas Pa‘a Sibbett, Chief of War follows the life of Ka‘iana, a native warrior navigating the political tension and transformation of 18th-century Hawaii. The series highlights the cultural depth and pride of Native Hawaiian identity — from storytelling to traditions — as never seen before on a global platform.
🎥 Authenticity at Its Core
To ensure every detail reflects historical and cultural truth, the series consulted over 15 native Hawaiian and Polynesian cultural advisors. Most of the cast is Polynesian, and large portions of the dialogue are in the Hawaiian language — an extraordinary choice that honors the voice of the people whose story is being told.
🌍 Filming Across the Pacific
Filming began in Hawaii and continued in New Zealand, with local islanders making up much of the crew. Major battle scenes were shot in the lava fields of Kalapana, giving the show an unfiltered, grounded feel. Over 600 locals were employed during the shoot, infusing the production with true island spirit.
🗓️ Premiere Details
Chief of War debuts with its first two episodes on August 1, 2025, exclusively on Apple TV+. New episodes will air every Friday through September 19, 2025.
Fans can expect rich storytelling, intense action, and a powerful cultural journey that only Jason Momoa could deliver with such authenticity and pride.
